About the Young Leadership Council

New York Housing Conference’s Young Leadership Council (YLC), formed in 2009, offers unique opportunities for an elite group of outstanding young housing professionals from across the state.  Through education, advocacy, networking and volunteerism, the program is designed to inspire young housing professionals to reach their full leadership potential and for the housing industry to remain strong and vital.  The program seeks to produce the next generation of top leaders for the affordable housing community.

YLC provides young professionals with an opportunity to interact with leaders in the housing industry, to learn about the housing needs all around the state and to lobby on Capitol Hill and at the State Capitol.  Members develop a greater understanding of the housing industry, its system of agencies and the importance of advocacy and leadership skills.  The Council also gives young professionals the opportunity to socialize and network with peers; and to grow and advance in their profession.

Members of the YLC are self nominated then appointed by the Board of Directors of the New York Housing Conference (NYHC).  Co-chairs are appointed by the Board to serve a two-year term.  The YLC also serves in an advisory role to the NYHC.

YLC members come from all sectors of the housing industry: for-profit and nonprofit developers, financial services, government, legal and accounting services, architecture, consulting and more.  The members meet on a regular basis for educational programs, volunteer work through NYHC, and to advocate for new and improved housing programs and policies.  The members network regularly through special events and on the NYHC Blog.  They advise the Board on a number of programs and topics including housing policy, educational programs and web content.
